I fell in love with the New York Public Library the first time I ever went to the city. Its architecture is so elegant and full of historic beauty both inside and out. So when the opportunity to photograph a sweet couple on the steps of this beautiful building presented itself, I jumped at the chance. Adam and Alexa brought so much energy to this engagement session and we had so much fun exploring the photo options it provides. They were even willing to brave the busy traffic on Fifth Avenue in front of the library!
If you’re planning to do engagement photos at the New York Public Library here are a few pieces of advice for you: first, be patient. This is a popular spot in the city so getting a great photo sometimes requires you to wait for people to pass by. It also means that you might be sharing the space with other photo takers. During this session, we also had to navigate waiting to use certain areas because other people were occupying the space. Second, we were able to use the bathrooms in the library for wardrobe changing, but if you are using the location before or after hours that won’t be an option and you’ll need to plan accordingly. Lastly, get there early. Arriving early in the day will give you plenty of daylight to work with as well as give you some cushion time if you need to wait a bit to get the shots you’re envisioning.
I also had a few teaching moments that I will be keeping in mind the next time I photograph an engagement session at the New Public Library. First, I’d like to try to plan for sunrise next time. Morning times mean fewer people and also potentially more sunlight coming in. There are also some more angles and locations around the library that we didn’t have time for this time but that I will definitely be exploring next time.
