8 Reasons To Consider Sunrise Engagement Photos

Raise your hands up high if you love sleeping in! Two hands way up high raising the roof over here at Erica J Photography. I get it, sleep is a beautiful thing and beds are these cozy little slices of heaven that only insane people leave if they don’t have to. So you might say I’m an equally insane person when I suggest, not only leaving your bed before the sun comes up but also planning your engagement photos for the crack of dawn aka sunrise. Why would anyone want to do that, you may ask? Well here are a few reasons you may want to consider it.

1. AVOID CROWDS

Don’t like waking up super early? Guess what? You’re in the majority! That works out to be advantageous for early morning portrait sessions because there are fewer people out and about. Which means fewer distractions to have to maneuver and fewer peering eyes if having an audience makes you feel self-conscious while having your picture taken.

2. BEAT THE HEAT

Warmer temperatures plus photo taking shenanigans can quickly take you from feeling fabulous to feeling like you’re drowning in your own sweat. Not a fun feeling OR look for photos.  Because the earth hasn’t had a chance to warm up the coolness of night yet, sunrise sessions offer a more mild temperature option for photos. This may be a great idea for you if you tend to sweat easily or get over-heated often.

3. GAINING LIGHT, INSTEAD OF LOSING IT

The magical thing about sunrise is that the world goes from darkness to golden light in a matter of moments. Not only is it a beautiful thing to behold, it also happens to be a win for morning photo shoots. Instead of racing against mother nature to get in all of the photos before it’s too dark, you’re increasingly getting more and more light, ensuring no photo op is left behind.

4. SUNRISE IS ON OUR SIDE

If you’re on the east coast like I am here in South Florida, sunrise is on our side. That means even MORE light. Sometimes buildings and trees block us east coasters from getting direct access to all the pretty sunset light BUT with sunrise, we can hop over to the beach and get all the direct pretty sunrise light our hearts desire. This type of direct light can look sooo stunning in photographs and wouldn’t be possible without hopping over to the other coast for sunset.

5. LESSER CHANCE OF RAIN

This is another reason for South Florida couples to consider sunrise. It’s no secret that weather in South Florida is temperamental, especially during rainy season. I’m no weatherman, but one thing I’ve noticed is that it tends to rain more often in the afternoon/ evening than it does in the morning. I’ve even experienced days where the morning is absolutely gorgeous and then it takes a turn into stormy and cloudy for the rest of the day. A morning session could lessen the chances of having your session rained out.

6. THE EVENING CAN BE THE BACKUP PLAN

Photo shoot days always have me praying to the sun gods to be merciful. Because, what if it rains? What if we have to cancel? What if there is no other day we can reschedule? Planning for a sunrise shoot has an automatic backup plan built in. In the event that it DOES rain during your morning session, or something else goes wrong you may have another chance to go through with the shoot later in the afternoon or evening on that same day!

7. YOU’LL LOOK TRIMMER

Have you ever noticed that your tummy is flatter when you first wake up than at the end of the day? That’s because your body does a lot of its digestive work while you sleep. That’s right, while you catch some zzz’s your body is working to obliterate the evidence of that extra slice of deep dish you ate.  The results: looking a lil trimmer in the a.m. Two thumbs up for a lil au naturale nip and tuck!

8. BONUS: BREAKFAST DATES

Moons Over My Hammy, Belgian waffles, thick applewood smoked bacon, freshly brewed dark roast….what’s not to love about breakfast? I always encourage having a little date after your engagement photos. Might as well paint the town while you’re still all gussied up from your photo sesh. Sunrise sessions are no exception. But instead of heading out to dinner, your session will be wrapped up in time for you to grab some fresh squeezed OJ and a short stack from your favorite breakfast spot.

So have I convinced you to consider a sunrise engagement session?  Great! Fire up the 6am alarm! Let’s GET OUR BOOTYS OUT OF BED AND MAKE SOME MAGIC!
